What is Cosmetic Bonding?

Cosmetic bonding is a procedure by which dentists perform esthetic enhancements to teeth with resin composite. These enhancements can be as small as a minor chip on a tooth to full coverage composite veneers.

Beautifully done cosmetic bonding will look natural and seamless.

Resin composite comes in many different shades and translucencies. In its working state, it has a putty consistency and can be sculpted and shaped to alter a tooth’s contours and shade.

All dentists use resin composite as a material for filling cavities. However, for the esthetic demands of front teeth, we will use specialty resin composites that have different optical qualities. This will give teeth the natural, life-like characteristics that your teeth have.

Cosmetic dentists have several different methods for creating the gradations of color, opacity, translucency, and unique properties of your teeth. This includes the layering of composites in different shades and translucencies to give it a three-dimensional depth and the use of colored stains applied with a fine brush.

What are the benefits of cosmetic bonding?

Cosmetic bonding benefits:

  • No alterations to the enamel of your teeth.

  • The ability to easily repair any chips.

  • Same-day results.

What are the disadvantages of cosmetic bonding?

Acidic foods and beverages can soften the surfaces of cosmetic bonding, making it susceptible to discoloration. Poor hygiene will also similarly break down the bonding.

The durability of cosmetic bonding depends on the skill of the dentist, the materials used, and the diet and oral hygiene of the patient. In the best cases, cosmetic bonding may look very good for 5-7 years before a touch-up is needed.
